Finally, to explain the final standings and playoff seedings:

Charlestown Chiefs hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Shave Artists.

Expereince the Evolution did not play the Robberbarons, but they hold the Goal Differential tiebreaker (+28 to +14), so they were awarded the #3 seed in the Parkhurst Conference.

Team Panda did not play IM Legend, but they hold the Goal Differential tiebreaker (+40 to +16), so they were awarded the #1 seed in the Mullen Conference.

Pittsburgh Penguins hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Puck You.

Legion of Doom 11, Bad Mother Puckers 7

Legion of Doom held a 2-1 lead after the first period then went on a scoring tear in the second to extend their lead to 8-3. Matt Rose of BMP dominated the 3rd period scoring 4 more goals in addition to the 3 he had netted in the first two periods. Legion of Doom was lead by Pat Canella (6 goals) and Brendan Beall (5 goals).

Pittsburgh Penguins win by forfeit over Chuck Norris Roundhouse Kicks

Team Panda 4, Meatlocker 2

Panda and Meatlocker went back and forth, with the game tied 2-2 going into the third period. Meatlocker just couldn't withstand Panda's offensive assault and gave up two third period goals, extending their team-record losing streak to 3 games.

IM Legend 4, Puck You 1

After a goal was taken away from each team (one for high sticking and the other on a hand pass) in the first period, IM Legend came out with a 1-0 lead. IM Legend scored again in the second to stretch the lead to two. They padded their lead with two more goals in the third. On the brink of being shut out, Puck You scored on a wraparound with 8 seconds left to bring the final tally to 4-1.

Theta Chi 4, Bad Mother Puckers 2

Theta Chi held a 3-0 lead after two periods, but BMP made the game close by scoring twice in the third, the second goal on a breakaway with about 4 minutes to play. Theta Chi added an insurance goal with about a minute to play to put the game away.

IM Legend 7, Pittsburgh Penguins 4

I didn't ref this game, so I don't know what happened.

Team Panda 12, High Life 0

Both teams were shortened by teammates who decided to watch the Pens game. The game ended after two periods when High Life took advantage of the mercy rule.

Shave Artists 13, Legion of Doom 3

Legion of Doom was shortmanned and had no subs for the game, which took its toll by the 3rd period as the Shave Artists wore them down with a relentless offensive assault.

Finally, just to let everyone know, I update the standings at the top of the page and the Playoff Race on the side of the page every night. The League Leaders gets updated once a week, at the end of the week's games (so usually Thursday night or Friday afternoon).

Day 4 Games

Results from Day 4:

Robberbarons 5, Phi Kappa Psi 1

The Robberbarons came out flying but couldn't find the net due to some timely defensive plays by the Phi Psis. The Robberbarons were up 2-0 after two periods and extended their lead in the third period, with the Phi Psis adding a goal late.

COM 6, Chuck Norris Roundhouse Kicks 4

The teams played even hockey through two periods with the game tied 3-3. COM pulled away in the third period and added a goal with about three minutes to play to extend their lead to two goals and finish with a 6-4 win.

Theta Chi 7, Legion of Doom 2

Legion of Doom was vastly short-manned for this game as they started with only one sub, as opposed to Theta Chi who had, by my best estimate, about three lines of offense and defense. The game was tied 2-2 near the end of the second when Legion of Doom took a game misconduct penalty for swearing at a referee. Theta Chi scored twice on the major penalty to pull ahead 4-2 and stretched out their lead over the rest of the third period against a sub-less Legion of Doom team. Finally, we'd like to wish a speedy recovery to JR Lovre from Legion of Doom who took a slapshot in the mouth and had a swollen lip.

Charlestown Chiefs 3, Experience the Evolution 2

The Chiefs came back from down 0-2 after two periods to tie the game and score the game-winner with 5 seconds left on the clock.

Week two of the season is here!

And with the new week, we have some new stuff. On the blog, I added the League Leaders board with leading Goal Scorers and Penalty Takers. I also added the Playoff Race section on the right hand side, so you can keep up on how your team stands in the hunt for the post-season. Per the rules, each division winner and two "wild cards" from each conference will make the playoffs for a total of 8 playoff teams (4 from each conference).

On the supplies front, I stopped by Dick's this weekend and bought a bucket of 15 hockey balls, which are in a clear plastic container marked "IM" in the closet (the balls all have "IM" written on them as well). Now that we have "official" IM hockey balls, we won't be scraping around for ones to play/warm up with.

Finally, for all the teams that had schedule changes, I'm pretty sure that the schedules on the blog reflect those schedule changes now. I checked over everything and I'm pretty sure that it's right, but if you see something that is inconsistent with what the e-mail I sent says about the schedule, let me know.

The first week of Floor Hockey has come and gone, and here are the scores from today's action.

Pittsburgh Penguins 4, Puck You 3

This was the closest game I've seen all season. Both teams played with a lot of heart and played strong until the end. The game was tied 1-1 after one period and 2-2 after two periods. The Penguins patented tic-tac-toe passing opened up a shot with a few minutes to play to put the Pens ahead 3-2. The Pens added another quick goal to stretch the lead to 4-2. With their backs against the wall, Puck You pulled their goalie and scored with 17 seconds left on the clock to pull the game to one. Puck You drew a faceoff deep in the Pens zone and had a few good chances on the doorstep as the game expired.

Team Panda 16, COM 1

I didn't ref this game, so if anyone who was there wants to add a recap, go for it!

Meatlocker 9, IM Legend 5

This game was close for the first and second period, with both teams trading goals and taking a 2-2 tie into the third. Meatlocker knocked in a few on the doorstep and Mike "Cyclops" Tylka added one from across the county line to stretch the Meatlocker lead to 6-4. With about 4 minutes to play, IM Legend picked up an elbowing penalty. On the penalty kill, IM Legend disputed a high stick call and in the process picked up a game misconduct penalty for swearing at a referee. IM Legend gave up a few goals on the major penalty and scored one shorthanded. Meatlocker added two empty net goals as time wound down to stretch the margin of victory to 9-5.

I also didn't ref this game, so...same deal here.

As a side note, just to comment on my experience with the first week of IM Hockey, I have noticed that there have been more major penalties called thus far (okay, I called both of them) than there were at this point in any previous season. I'm not going to pass judgment and say that people are bringing previously held grudges onto the courts. It seems to me that people are getting more heated than usual over an IM sport. I do have extra copies of the rules available at all times if people would like to look over them. In addition, copies of the rules were e-mailed to each captain at the outset of the season, so if there are any questions, just ask your team captain. We are always open to suggestions to improving the rules in future seasons. Just try to remember the point of playing IM Floor Hockey is to have fun. We can all get caught up in the moment, but realize that everyone (including refs, scorekeepers and players) are there to have fun.

Phi Kappa Psi 19, Bad Mother Puckers 3

The Phi Psis came out strong and played the whole game without any subs. Justin Snodgrass tallied 10 goals and Eric Neuenschwander added five more as the Phi Psis cruised to victory.

IM Legend defeated Chuck Norris Roundhouse Kicks

I didn't ref this game, so I don't know the score or anything about it. If anyone would like to put a recap here, go for it!

Meatlocker 9, COM 1

Meatlocker struggled early on as they shook off the rust of a new season. COM kept the game close as Meatlocker held a 4-1 advantage going into the 3rd period. Phil Gibson took the opening faceoff of the third period straight down the court and scored 4 seconds into the period. This is possibly the fastest goal after the start of a period ever in IM Hockey, but we don't have any records to confirm or deny it. Meatlocker held on to a steady advantage with two of their players finishing the game with hat tricks. On another note, we would like to wish a speedy recovery to Meatlocker captain Mike Tylka who took a slapshot in the eye while playing defense.

Experience the Evolution 8, Legion of Doom 3

Legion of Doom took an early lead but couldn't hold on as Experience the Evolution went on a 5-goal run to end the game. Evolution avenged their loss in last year's championship game and jumps into first place in the Lovre Division.

Four matchups have come and gone and the IM Hockey season is off and running!

Early games:

Puck You 7, Team Panda 6

Both teams came out flying with 3 goals scored in the first 4 minutes of play. Panda came back to take a 3-2 lead into the first intermission break. The second period belonged to Puck You, who capitalized on a 2-minute throwing the stick penalty to stretch their lead to 6-4. Panda came back to tie the game at 6-6 in the third period, but Puck You added a goal on a long shot from deep in the defensive zone to seal the game with about 3 minutes to play.

Pittsburgh Penguins 9, High Life 1

The Penguins sprung a 5-1 lead in the first period and didn't look back, closing the game out with a solid 9-1 victory.

Late games:

Charlestown Chiefs 7, Shave Artists 5

The Chiefs came out firing and didn't let up all game, maintaining a lead of at least a goal throughout, dealing the Shave Artists their first loss of the season.

Robberbarons win by forfeit over Theta Chi

The Theta Chi team did not show up for their game and the Robberbarons won by forfeit.

Floor Hockey Tournament

Delta Tau Delta and Phi Delta Theta are co-sponsoring a Floor Hockey Tournament for charity on Saturday, February 23. Teams will consist of 5-7 players and the entry fee will be $20/team. All proceeds from the tournament will go to Active Aging of Meadville. For those on IM teams that had more than 7 people on it, you may have to split your teams up to form multiple teams. Teams will get to play at least 3 games and there will be a prize for the team winning the tournament ($50 gift certificate to Los Compadres). We'll be tabling in the Campus Center during lunch time at the end of this week and all next week. Stop by the table if you have any questions or to pick up an entry form.

Clearing up the Playoff Picture

The Evolution wins the Cook Division. Legion of Doom recieves the second playoff spot from the Cook Division. I wasn't at this game, so I don't have a recap. If anyone who was there wants to post a recap, go for it.

Jesse Conlon 7, Benedict Arnolds 4

This game was a lot closer than the score indicates. The Benedict Arnolds were down 5-4 and drew a power play with 1:02 to play in the game. Unable to score, they got a stoppage with 19 seconds to go. Down by one, they rushed their team foreward, resulting in a 2-on-0 breakaway for Jesse Conlon that extended their lead to 6-4. Off the ensuing faceoff, the Benedict Arnolds rushed forward again, resulting in another breakaway goal to spread the final score out to 7-4.

Vukovich Division Scenario

If Jesse Conlon beats the Bad Mother Puckers, they will win the Vukovich Division.

If the Benedict Arnolds beat the Pittsburgh Penguins AND Jesse Conlon wins, the Benedict Arnolds will finish second in the Vukovich Division.

If the Benedict Arnolds beat the Pittsburgh Penguins and Jesse Conlon loses, the Benedict Arnolds will win the Vukovich Division.

If either the Benedict Arnolds OR Jesse Conlon lose on Thursday, Meatlocker will make the playoffs.

If BOTH the Benedict Arnolds AND Jesse Conlon lose on Thursday, Meatlocker will win the division and Jesse Conlon will finish second.

The Benedict Arnolds 6, Meatlocker 5 (OT).

Recap: This was an excellent game between two evenly matched teams. The Benedict Arnolds jumped out with a goal early, but Meatlocker tied it up halfway through the first period. Meatlocker opened the second with two quick goals to move to a 3-1 lead. The teams exchanged goals to open the third period to bring the score to 4-2. The Benedict Arnolds responded strongly to Meatlocker's 4th goal by coming back to tie the game and eventually take a one goal lead with just over two minutes to play. Meatlocker tied the game up with little over a minute to go to send the game to overtime. The Benedict Arnolds scored on a shot from the point to seal the game.

Recap: In spite of the Bad Mother Puckers jumping out to a quick lead, the Penguins battled back. The Penguins had more reserves for this game than they'd had for any prior game and it showed. They endured into the 3rd period when their tic-tac-toe passing finally broke the game open.

IM Floor Hockey Rules

IM FLOOR HOCKEY RULES

FALL 2007

Playing Time and Intermission:

· Playing time shall be 30 minutes in duration, divided into 3 periods of 10 minutes each. The intermission between each period shall be 3 minutes. When overtime is used, there will be no intermission.

· The first overtime (sudden death) period will last for 5 minutes.

· If the game is still tied after the first overtime, a shootout will be used to determine the winner. (Playoffs & Championship only: Two overtimes before shootout)

· In the last minute of each period, during penalties, and the last 2 minutes of overtime, the clock will stop on every whistle (goals, when the ball is frozen, and when it goes out of play).

· During the first 9 minutes of each period, the clock will only stop after goals.

· Teams are allowed 2 timeouts per game. Timeouts are 1 minute in length.

Game Procedures:

· Each team captain must sign-in players prior to the start of the game.

· All players must be listed on the roster (no exceptions).

· There will be 5 players per team on the court at a time. Generally, this means 4 players and a goalie per team, but a team may pull their goalie if they so choose.

· If a team does not have enough for a full team (5), a forfeit will result.

· If a team is losing by 10 goals, the game will end there unless the losing team wishes to play on. If the losing team wishes to play on, they will be given the option of ending the game at the next intermission break. If they choose to play the next period, they will not be given the option to end the game again until that period is over. If the losing team scores a goal, and thus is losing by less than 10 goals, they will not be given the option to end the game.

· Penalty minutes will carry over between periods and into overtime (if necessary).

· Fighting warrants a suspension from the league for the rest of the season.

· Players are permitted to wear any equipment they deem necessary.

· There are no offsides or icing calls.

· Substitutions may be made at any time.

· Hand Passes:
o Hitting ball with open palm: okay
o Grabbing ball and setting on ground: okay (can’t move feet until ball touches ground (face-off at nearest point)
o Grabbing and throwing: illegal

· Ball has to touch ground on face-off before players can make contact. Referees reserve the right to kick players out of the face-off circle.

· Out-of-Bounds:
o Face off is at nearest point to where ball was hit from
o A ball is considered out of bounds if it makes contact with any gym equipment (this includes a basketball hoop, the track, an elliptical, or a treadmill) or passes outside the designated playing area

· Stoppages of play: Referees may stop the game when the ball goes out of bounds, when the goalie covers the ball for 5 seconds or on a “dead ball” situation. Stoppages of play result in a face-off.

· Dead ball: Two or more players are involved in a scrum for the ball and the referee deems they are not directly playing the puck. A “Dead Ball” will result in a face-off at the nearest point.

· Last team to score in regulation shoots first during the shootout. If score is 0-0, captains do rock, paper, scissors at center ice.

· When a shootout is required, any four players may shoot in succession alternating teams. If the game is still tied after the shootout, then the same 4 players will shoot (in sudden death) until the tie is broken.

Penalties:

· Major and minor penalties, 1 minute for minor, 2 for major.

· Game Misconduct:
o 1st offense: ejection from game
o 2nd offense: ejection from current game and suspension from next
o 3rd offense: ejection from league

· Minor:
o Elbowing, hooking
o Holding, and holding onto stick
o Hip check (interference)
o High stick (only if someone gets hit) - no contact = face-off from nearest point
o Unsportsmanlike conduct (profanity towards another player) (1st warning)
o Tripping
o Broken stick, if not dropped immediately
o Intentionally breaking of another players stick

· Major:
o Spearing
o Slashing
o Cross checking (w/ stick), body check (upper body)
o USC (2nd warning)

· Game Misconduct: (ejection from game: team also serves a 2 minute penalty)
o USC (3rd warning)
o Profanity toward ref
o Fighting
o Alcohol on breath
o Throwing a stick

· A team will be charged 3 penalty minutes on the record (to be used in tiebreakers and conduct violations) when a player receives a game misconduct.

· If any one player incurs the equivalent of 3 minor penalties (3 minutes of penalty time) in one game, they are suspended for the rest of that game.

· If any player incurs the equivalent of 5 minor penalties over 2 consecutive games, they are suspended for the rest of the game their 5th penalty occurred in and next game that their team plays.

· If any player incurs the equivalent of 10 minor penalties over the course of a season, they are suspended for the rest of the season and the following season.

· Any player suspended for the season (for fighting or for incurring 10 penalty minutes) may not return to their team for the playoffs.

Playoffs:

· Each team’s points (2 for win, 1 for OT/SO loss) determine the division standings, which will be used to determine playoff seeding.

· If two teams are tied at the end of the regular season, the winner of the regular season games will be used as a tie breaker. If a second tiebreaker is necessary, Goal Differential will be used. If a third tiebreaker is needed, the team with the higher sportsmanship rating will be awarded the higher position.

Forfeit Fees (IM Policy)
A $20.00 fee will be charged to the Captain’s student account each time two of the following infractions occur:
Missed captain’s meeting
Missed contest
Eligibility violation
Conduct violation
A conduct violation is defined as the incurrence of 20 penalty minutes by a team over the course of the season (playoffs included).
